Views Along The Marstons Mills River
Harvesting Herring
Pictured: This view is looking upstream to where Route 149 now crosses the river.
History: The Marstons Mills River, Mill Pond and Middle Pond were utilized for the harvesting of Herring by the Marstons Mills
Fishing Company which established the Herring Run in 1867. Herring were used for fishing bait and for fertilizer.
In this picture, the barrels on the right were used to pack Herring for shipment out of the village.
Today: Herring still run up the river each Spring but there is no commercial taking of fish. The taking of Herring by residents via
permit is allowed, but has been temporarily suspended due to a decrease in population.
The Herring Run is under the stewardship of the Liberty Hall Club which organizes activities to clean, repair and maintain its operation.
Source: This photo is from a postcard which was untitled, postally unused and undated.
An annotation on the back says: "Barrels for herring outside building Uncle Foster Crocker had. F.E.J.".
